Oh what a shame. It now seems obvious to me that Imam Zaid Shakir could only exist in America because he is (a) a populist, and (b) ignorant of history. Is he so afraid of assassination that he gives the most ludicrous explanation of Islam's lack of progress as the bubonic plague? The one thing that stopped the Muslim world dead in its tracks (often literally) were the Crusades. You had a bunch of backward, greedy Europeans attacking the Middle East on the pretext of religion that was actually a hidden economic war. No civilization, no matter how advanced (as the Muslims were at that stage), can successfully carry out a war of attrition for two centuries. The eventual Muslim victory was pyrrhic. This was in the 13th century.

It would have made a much greater argument to rely on the truth. Like the USA touts itself now, the Muslim civilization at the time of the Crusades was one of the greatest, and modern, in all the world. But getting involved in a multi-generational war (whether it asked for it or not) led to its downfall. There is, in this history lesson, no greater warning than an American patriot can give to his fellow men. Do not go down this McCain-esque path. Whether righteous or not, it will be your undoing.

If Imam Zaid Shakir would like to take his views to Europe, I'm sure a number of prominent historians would be more than happy to correct his misperceptions. But I see that historical blindness is a necessary prerequisite to so-called political activism in the USA. If I seem harsh, it's because I see someone with influence squandering his oratory gifts. The debate deserves better than this man.
