ISLAMABAD // Widespread public disillusionment with hardliners among Pakistan’s clergy, who for 30 years preached romantic notions of jihad, has sparked a renaissance of sorts in traditional Islamic practices, social observers say.

The trend represents a mass about-face among Pakistanis who, from the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan until September 11, were subjected to jihad-focused indoctrination through a state-proscribed school curriculum that reinforced fiery sermons to congregations. Read the rest of this entry »

What Should South Asians Do With Their Wealth?

By Sudhir Venkatesh November 25, 2008, 12:27 pm <!– — Updated: 1:30 pm –>

I have been posting on this site about the trials and tribulations of young donors. I’m in the middle of chronicling the life of Michael, an heir to a trust, who must soon begin giving away $78 million (U.S.). More on his philanthropic journey in the next post.

Another group is stumbling into the American philanthropic scene. Young South Asians living in the U.S. (Pakistanis, Indians, and Bangladeshis are the majority). Some moved to America after college, and others (like me) were raised here. They are coming into significant personal wealth.

I recently brokered a discussion of six prospective donors. Their concern was: “What is the best way for South Asians to be philanthropic in America?” The half-dozen entrepreneurs I spoke with with have committed their personal resources — a collective sum of $2 million (modest relative to most charities), and they hope to raise more from others. But they need some help to meet their objectives. Allow me to explain. And as always, please chime in with comments.

They are all successful, highly educated, completely obsessed with money, and they want to do good. But they want to help South Asian-Americans, which is not so straightforward. Before you reply, “Give to the United Way,” I want to make clear that this group wants to help South Asians progress in the U.S. That doesn’t preclude mainstream charitable donation, but they want to move South Asians forward. Former Secretary of State James Baker once said that the free advice from a man who offered his opinions often was worth what the secretary had paid for it.

This is how blacks in America need to take Ayman al-Zawahiri‘s recent tape praising Malcolm X and condemning Barack Obama.

As Osama Bin Laden‘s top deputy, Zawahiri knows a mark when he sees one and believes black Americans to be a collective chump gullible enough to be swayed by arguments against Obama that try to smack him with the dead horse of black nationalism.

The threatening video issued last week was intended to whip up support for what is known as radical Islam by using a martyr to a lost cause, Malcolm X. Read the rest of this entry »

Justice Nets 2 Wins As Embassy Blast Verdicts Endure

Zolfa Elaydi is comforted by her son Jihad as she and her daughter Fidaa sob after the verdict against the charity.

A federal jury in Dallas convicted five men with ties to a prominent Muslim charity of scores of criminal charges yesterday, handing the U.S. government a significant victory in its largest terrorism financing trial.

The verdicts against former leaders of the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, once ranked as the country’s largest Muslim charitable organization, came only hours after a federal appeals court panel in New York upheld criminal convictions of three men accused of helping plot deadly bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa.

Together, the developments strengthened the Justice Department‘s power to choke the sources of funding that help fuel terrorist schemes — and to use warrantless electronic surveillance to monitor the activities of U.S. citizens suspected of engaging in international conspiracies. Pakistan dissolving military spy agency’s political wing

International Herald Tribune

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has disbanded the political wing of the military intelligence agency, the foreign minister said Sunday.

The cooperation of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, directorate is regarded as vital to the West in fighting the threat of Al Qaeda globally and defeating the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan.

But critics call it a “state within a state.” Pakistan’s eight-month-old civilian government has regularly accused the ISI’s political wing of involvement in the overthrow of their governments. Neighboring Afghanistan and India view the ISI with great distrust. Read the rest of this entry »
