I too share this weird commonality of growing Muslim amongst Jews. In fact Zeba forgot, but I too also attended Hebrew Academy but not as long as her and her siblings. I was the only Arab in this school. I moved on to a regular inner city public school amongst mainly Christians and then to an affluent public school for junior high and high school that had a large Jewish population who taught me to shalom rav al yisreal (grant peace over Isreal).

Zeba -

My parents came in the 60s too and that is exactly their experience - being Muslim-American for them meant having a diverse group of Muslim friends and community members from all ethnic backgrounds - and being American meant serving in American society with fellow Americans.

Now mosques are enclaves of Muslims of various ethnic communities and one can grow up in America - being South Asian Muslim and never meet non-Muslims or non-South Asian Muslims. Its sad that all Muslims (much less all Americans) don't always know of the diversity and pluralism of Islam and Muslims.

Your Hebrew school experience is amazing - your parents were very wise.
