For a Christian, the Christ on the Cross is an important symbol just as Mohammed is for the Muslims.
There is no reason to make these persons ridiculous even when someone does not believe their sayings or messages.
As an Atheist I am ready to critise religious ideas but with respect for persons and symbols.
So Vilks is wrong but that is no reason to treat him with dead…

What seems to be totally absent from these sorts of discussions is the issue of power disparities. When people portray Obama as a dead monkey, it’s discussed in terms of its offensiveness to historically oppressed minorities, not freedom of speech. But when the targets are Muslim, well, the issue of racism and power disparities don’t even make it onto the radar.
