Being of this community, I am all too familiar with the pressure to “appear Muslim” for the sake of what others will think.

It’s already the source of a lot of gossip in the community, and the sentiment that keeps coming up is that she should have honor and dignity and not shame her people.

It’s more about saving face then anything else, and especially because it’s a woman marrying a western man. Often times, the people in the bully bullpen are the least Muslim of all.

She listened to her family and culture and tried a traditional arranged Afghan marriage at a young age. Now, it’s time to live her life for herself.

Frankly, what Mezhgan does at the age of 36 is not her parents or the community’s business.
